Anxiety in Pregnancy

Understanding Anxiety in Pregnancy — and How We’re Here to Support You 🤰💛🌿

Pregnancy is often described as one of the most amazing and beautiful times in a woman’s life — but for many women, it can also be one of the most emotionally challenging.

From the moment you see that positive test, a flood of feelings can appear — excitement, disbelief, love, but also fear, uncertainty and worry.

And if you’ve experienced a previous miscarriage or loss, or you’re noticing your pregnancy symptoms suddenly easing, or it just feels like you need some extra reassurance that all is well - that anxiety can feel almost overwhelming. You might find yourself asking:

“Is my baby okay?”
“Should I still feel this way?”
“Am I overreacting — or is something wrong?”

“Is my worry and fear going to harm my baby?”

At Dial A Midwife, we understand these worries — deeply. We speak to women every day who are feeling exactly as you do. And we want you to know this:
You are not alone, your feelings are valid, and support is available — right now.

Our free, online midwifery service is available 7 days a week, Australia-wide, open until 9pm daily, and completely free with a Medicare card. Whether you’re in your first few weeks, preparing for birth, or with a little one - we’re here to listen, reassure and guide you through the ups and downs of pregnancy.

Why Anxiety During Pregnancy Is So Common

It might surprise you to know that anxiety in pregnancy is extremely common. In fact, studies suggest that up to 1 in 5 pregnant women experience significant anxiety during pregnancy.

But that number may be even higher — because so many women quietly suffer in silence, brushing off their fears as “normal pregnancy hormones.”

Anxiety can appear for many reasons, including:

  • Previous pregnancy loss or miscarriage

  • Fertility struggles or a long journey to conceive

  • Hormonal changes affecting mood and sleep

  • Fear of something going wrong with the baby

  • Reduced or changing pregnancy symptoms (like nausea easing or breast tenderness fading)

  • Health concerns or confusing information from online sources

  • General worry about birth, motherhood, finances, relationships, housing or the future

And sometimes, there’s no clear reason at all. You may simply feel uneasy — even when everything seems “fine” on paper.

The truth is: anxiety doesn’t always make sense. But that doesn’t make it any less real or important.

The Emotional Toll of Early Pregnancy Anxiety

Early pregnancy can feel especially uncertain. There are so many unknowns, and so few visible signs that your baby is developing well.

Many women describe this stage as a “silent waiting period” — waiting for their first scan, waiting or symptoms to appear (or disappear), waiting for reassurance, waiting for results … waiting.

This uncertainty can be emotionally exhausting, particularly if:

  • You’ve had a previous miscarriage, and every small cramp or symptom change triggers panic.

  • Your pregnancy symptoms suddenly ease, and you fear something’s wrong.

  • You’re waiting for your first ultrasound or blood test results, and it feels like time is crawling by.

  • You’re comparing yourself to others who seem more confident, relaxed, with more pronounced symptoms, or “further along.”

It’s in these moments that anxiety often peaks — and having a midwife to talk to, someone who understands the medical, midwifery and emotional sides of pregnancy, can make an enormous difference.

That’s where we come in.

How Dial A Midwife Supports Women Experiencing Anxiety

Our midwives are qualified, registered health professionals with years of experience supporting women through all stages of pregnancy — from the first faint line on a test to the early weeks of motherhood.

When you contact us, you’ll speak directly with a real midwife, not a call centre or chatbot. We take the time to listen, to answer your questions, and to help you feel calmer, informed and supported. Our appointments run for 45 minutes, giving you the time that you need. Also, you can use our service as often as you need. There are no limits :)

Here’s how we can help:

💬 1. A Listening Ear — When You Need It Most

Sometimes, what you need most isn’t medical jargon or “just wait and see.” You need someone to listen — really listen.

Our midwives are compassionate, non-judgmental and trained to support women experiencing fear, worry or emotional distress in pregnancy.

You can talk openly about your feelings, your symptoms, your past experiences, your hopes and wishes for your pregnancy and baby or anything that’s been keeping you awake at night.

We’ll help you make sense of what’s happening and talk through what might come next — calmly and clearly. And if you need help deciphering the medical jargon - we can help with that, too!

🌼 2. Reassurance and Evidence-Based Guidance

The internet is full of conflicting pregnancy advice — and Googling your symptoms at 2am rarely helps anxiety.

Our midwives provide evidence-based information you can trust. We explain what’s normal, what might warrant a check-up, and when to seek additional care.

We can also explain what to expect at your next scan, what your test results mean, offer a second opinion or explain how to navigate early pregnancy clinics and appointments.

Knowledge is power — and reassurance comes from understanding.

🤝 3. Emotional Support After Pregnancy Loss

If you’ve previously experienced a miscarriage or stillbirth, it’s natural to feel heightened anxiety in a subsequent pregnancy.

Every twinge, every symptom change, every day that feels “different” can trigger fear.

Our midwives provide gentle, trauma-informed support for women who’ve experienced loss. We understand the layers of grief, fear and hope that coexist after miscarriage. We also offer care for 6 weeks following a miscarriage or pregnancy loss.

We can talk you through what’s normal, connect you with grief counselling and psychology services if needed and support you emotionally.

You don’t have to navigate this alone — we’re here to walk alongside you.

🕊️ 4. Tools and Strategies for Managing Anxiety

While anxiety is often an understandable reaction to uncertainty, there are practical tools that can help you feel calmer and more in control.

Our midwives can guide you through techniques that truly help! These small, practical steps can make a huge difference in helping you feel connected to your pregnancy again.

When to Reach Out for Help

You don’t need to wait until your anxiety feels “serious enough” to seek help.

If you:

  • Feel worried or restless,

  • Have unanswered questions,

  • Want to quickly check something that you’re not sure of,

  • Have trouble sleeping because of worry,

  • Notice changes in your appetite or mood,

  • Feel detached from your pregnancy, or

  • Just can’t shake the feeling that something’s wrong —

It’s time to reach out.

We can provide support and guidance and, if necessary, help you access further professional help.
